Participatory Mapping Toolkit (2023)

The Northeastern University College of Arts, Media and Design Participatory Mapping team (comprised of Professor Cara Michell, Angel Pollydore, Tessa Hocquet and myself) assembled this toolkit for primary use by youth cartographers after our work with 826 Boston had completed. The toolkit can be used as a process guide for students interested in making their own maps of their neighborhoods, including perspectives from individuals to facilitators of larger group events with the overall goal of using participatory mapping techniques and psychogeography to better represent different parts of a city. The toolkit also details the history of cartography and different methods of map creation, critical moments of reflection & revision and methods for sharing a map after completion. Click through the slides below to read the toolkit!
